Charity organisations are increasingly turning to new technologies to help promote campaigns and causes, with mobile apps becoming a top feature that is utilised to raise awareness and encourage donations. Over the weekend (April 26 to 28) 11 teams of application designers and developers, business analysts, project leaders and mobile business designers gathered for the first not-for-profit Appathon.

New look for Facebook's mobile layout

The use of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter on mobile is growing, with a Nielsen report revealing that mobile usage is becoming pervasive all around the world. The Mobile Consumer: A Global Snapshot from Nielsen found that a large number (65 per cent) of Australian mobile users had smartphones, with the research company noting that smartphone owners tend to be drawn towards using social networks and games.

Keyword targeting introduced in Twitter timelines

If Twitter campaigns are a core part of your charity organisation's social media activities, then you will be glad to hear about a new feature that will give your campaign an extra boost! Keyword targeting in timelines is the newest feature on the Twitter Advertising platform, introduced on April 17, allowing advertisers to reach users based on keywords in their recent Tweets and the Tweets with which users recently engaged.

Google adds information about nonprofits to the Knowledge Graph

When a nonprofit organisation is searched on Google, you will see information on the right side of the search results that highlights the nonprofits' cause, recent Google Plus posts and financials. Google announced on April 10 that they have started to add information about nonprofits to the Knowledge Graph - so it may become necessary for your charity organisation to create a Google+ page if you don't already have one in action!
