Social Entrepreneurship: From Problem Solving to Transformation

Social entrepreneruship can involve taking a pragmatic approach to solving a social problem. It can also sdopt a transformative approach to create sustainable social change. This presentation focuses on the practical issues of balancing these twin strategic challenges for the not-for-profit sector.

Presenter:

Allan O'Connor is the Academic Director, post-graduate programs in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Entrepreneurship Commercialisation and Innovation Centre (ECIC). Allan has worked in the small and medium enterprise sector developing and introducing new products, entering new markets, and expanding opportunities in both established and new business environments. His qualifications include a Master in Enterprise Innovation and his doctoral studies examined issues of public policy for entrepreneurship education and economic development.

As a digital native and aspiring activist, Edward tells the story of his emerging passion for the internet and digital technology. Find out about various initiatives and movements that are going on all around the world and come away with a stronger understanding of the trends in the internet world.

Presenter:

Edward Harran is a freelance digital and social media strategist based out of Brisbane. He has engaged in numerous digital ventures - previously as an online marketing analyst at Wotif.com and social media strategist for Mongolian NGO, Edurelief. A budding social entrepreneur, he is passionate about how digital technology can be used as a force for social change. Besides spending far too much time online, Edward loves travelling, good conversation and the company of passionate people.

NGO 2.0: Networks, Innovation and Engagement

Drawing on his work with Cisco’s Internet Business Solutions Group and as Chair of the Australia Social Innovation Exchange, Martin will reflect on what technology is doing to organisations generally and specifically within civil society and offer some insights about the impact on NGO’s and the social sector of the new collaboration and communication technologies.

Martin Stewart-Weeks, Director, Public Sector (Asia-Pacific) Internet Business Solutions Group,
Cisco Systems Inc, has over 20 years’ experience in organisational management and consulting in the corporate and public sectors and with a wide range of not-for-profit organisations.

A consistent theme of his professional experience has been public policy and management. He has held senior policy, management and advisory positions for Ministers and government agencies at the federal and state government level in Australia.

In his work with the Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG) at Cisco, Martin’s focus is primarily on the public sector.  He works at the senior executive and political level to help shape Internet business solutions and online strategies at both an agency and whole-of-government level.

In January 2007, Martin took up a position as Director for IBSG’s public sector practice in Asia-Pacific
Martin has extensive background in the third sector as a consultant and writer and is currently Chair of the Australian Social Innovation Exchange (ASIX).
