Creative Commons for the Non-Profit Sector

Copyright is one of the many legal complexities non-profits encourter in their day to day operation. Knowing what you can and can't do with the content you use and create is confusing, but is a necessary evil. Creative Commons is one tool available to non-profits to help make sense of this area of law. At the core of the Creative Commons project is a suite of standardised copyright licences, freely avaialble to creators, that foster sharing and collaboration. Creative Commons builds upon the all rights reserved of traditional copyright to create a voluntary some rights reserved system. There is a whole range of content out there that is available on more flexible terms than traditional copyright. Elliott aims to give you the information you need to gain access to these resources and manage your own copyrighted works more efficiently.

Presenter: Elliott Bledsoe – Project Officer, Creative Commons Australia

How going on online can improve your fundraising
In the current challenging economic climate, non-profit orgnaisations cannot afford to sustain the high cost of raising funds, which typically require management's precious time. What many don't realise is that it is relatively simple and easy to start accepting donations online - even in as little as 45 minutes. With more than 100 000 nonprofit organisations globally using PayPal to raise money online, this session will explore how non-profits can lower the cost of acquiring donors and even boost their average donation value by moving online. BREAKOUT SESSION TWO

For the Good of the Sector: Your information is valuable

Developing a grievance or reimbursement policy seems totally boring when what you really want to be doing is helping the homeless, saving at risk wildlife or delivering on whatever your mission statement might be. Neverthless good governance is important to the vitality and robustness of any organisation. But where do you go to find out what good governance looks like? Many organisations in the non-profit sector have developed quality, valuable governance and procedural information. What could be a valuable resource for emerging non-profits often remains siloed inside individual organisations. A pro-active, open publishing approach to sharing this information could result in a sector that is stronger, more efficient and more stable. A lack of clear policies and internal expertise (or the funding to gain access to external expertise) needed to properly manage the copyright surrouding this information acts as a barrier to obtaining these benefits. This workshop is designed to explore potential solutions through proven copyright management mechanisms such as the Creative Commons licences. Attendees will be given the opportunity to contribute to research around what a sector-wide non-profit information sharing framework might look like being conducted by the Creative Commons Clinic at the Australian Research Council Centrer of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation.
