A Guide to Maintaining and Supporting Public Computers

TechSoup's MaintainIT Projectis an effort funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to gather and distribute stories around maintaining and supporting public computers. MaintainIT interviews libraries and publishes the stories, tips, and techniques we hear so that libraries can learn from the experiences of others. Through articles, blog posts, and downloadable guides called Cookbooks, we promote and share the inspired work libraries are doing to ensure that access to information is free and open to everyone.

By: MaintainIT Project

The first of these practical guides, The Joy of Computing: A Cookbook for Small and Rural Libraries, which you can download below, is packed full of stories, tips, and techniques gathered from the people doing the real work: rural librarians.

Inside, you'll learn how to:

  • Develop a technology plan that keeps your computers humming and your patrons happy.
  • Implement practical maintenance techniques, such as how to lock down your computers and keep them virus free.
  • Gather volunteers to improve the services you provide.

And don't forget to take time to consider the future and your organization's place in it. Read a chapter that will inspire and encourage you to start thinking ahead about new services you can provide the public.

Tell Us What You Think

Download and use the Cookbook and then let the MaintainIT team know your thoughts about it. The more feedback we receive, the better equipped the team is to create a Cookbook that meets the needs of those supporting public computers.

Please share your thoughts using this anonymous survey or get in touch: maintainit at techsoup dot com. We'd love to hear from you and learn about your experience.
