In study after study researchers find that when people are promoted to lead others they lack the knowledge, skills, tools and support to do the job they want. Many quit, others struggle along until they burn out. Individuals and orgnisations suffer as a result.
The challenge is even greater in smaller and not-for-profit organisations where leaders are usually experienced practitioners, promoted because of their expertise and commitment, not because they have specialised management skills.
