We are excited to share Microsoft's announcement that Libraries are now eligible for NFP Microsoft Cloud licensing. Libraries have always been eligible for donations for their public-access computer needs through the Microsoft nonprofit program at Connecting Up/TechSoup New Zealand. For staff needs, however, libraries needed to get Microsoft academic offers for cloud solutions. There was also a brief period in January 2022 when all offers moved to educational requests. We know this has become a bit confusing. We heard your feedback — that the academic licensing was not always the best fit for library needs — so we advocated on your behalf in partnership with Microsoft. As of 17 October 2022, libraries and museums can get all their needs through Microsoft's nonprofit program at Connecting Up/TechSoup New Zealand. Every charity/not-for-profit procures goods and services, from the smallest new charity to those with multi-million dollar turnovers. No matter how large or small a charity is, the basic procurement processes are the same. The process entails identifying the requirements and suppliers, negotiating and awarding contracts, managing contracts and suppliers and monitoring the savings produced and benefits delivered. Compared to a small start-up charity, larger charities understandably have more complex procurement processes, which will take longer to complete. The initial goal of TinyCheck was to help NFP organisations support victims of domestic violence and protect their privacy, but Kaspersky quickly realised it could be of use to anyone. In response to the challenges facing the not-for-profit sector, Connecting Up has launched a new series of events to help Australian not-for-profits respond to COVID-19. Connecting Up has a long history of engaging with and supporting the Australian not-for-profit sector by connecting it with a large number of experts and mentors at the annual Connecting Up Conference. Because the postponement of this year's conference until November 4-6 has made it impossible for us to provide that direct support in the way we normally would, we have created the Connecting Up COVID-19 Expert Bar. As Australia celebrates Refugee Week, the Australian Government is being asked to consider a Canadian-style refugee sponsorship scheme that lets people financially sponsor the permanent migration of a refugee or refugee family. The approach is considered a tried and tested way to encourage community participation in the welcoming and supporting of refugees. Canada has welcomed more than 325,000 refugees over the past 40 years. A petition supporting the move has been signed by more than 35,000 people. The COVID-19 pandemic has seen many of us transition to working from home, and in doing so has created the opportunity for many of us to continue working remotely. For that to be possible into the future, though, a robust work from home policy should be high up on all of our agendas. So what should a good work from home policy include to ensure everyone has equal opportunities, good support and knows what to expect? As with any policy, it should clearly define expectations and responsibilities, who is eligible, a request and approval process and some basic guidelines to ensure good productivity and low risk. A 20 per cent revenue cut to the charity sector could cause almost 90% of charities to immediately make an operating loss, according to a new report from Social Ventures Australia and the Centre for Social Impact. Social Ventures Australia CEO Suzie Riddell said this would mean hundreds of thousands of charity sector jobs could be lost unless the sector receives more support. Riddell said the report showed that thousands of charities were at risk at a time when she said the sector should be being prepared to aid recovery post COVID-19. Tony Stuart, who is leading the NFP coronavirus committee established by the National COVID-19 Coordination Commission this month, says the NFP sector can make a significant contribution to the community during the COVID-19 crisis beyond. Mr Stuart, who is the CEO of UNICEF Australia and the chair of the Charity, Philanthropy and Fundraising Advisory Group, told Pro Bono News the group aimed to identify the barriers charities faced when providing services. He said tackling dropping giving levels and charity red tape will be the top priorities of the newly established NFP working group to ensure charities can assist during and after coronavirus. After answering 45,000 questions in March, ABC News has responded to another 15,000 questions about COVID-19 from April, with the focus shifting from symptoms and testing to the road ahead. Questions about the science, communication and technology were answered, as well as questions about the Australian strategy for moving to the next phase. One reader asked if it was known if COVID-19 can mutate yet, and whether that might mean creating a vaccine is pointless. A third of charities with a turnover of $250,000 or less have less than three months of financial reserves remaining, according to a new survey. The findings, in the RESET 2020 National Support Program and Research Study, which is still open, show that 50 per cent of the organisations surveyed are suffering a loss of revenue, and 11 per cent needed immediate financial support. The information gathered so far also shows that despite 44 per cent of charities experiencing increased demand for services during the coronavirus crisis, just 4 per cent report an increase to revenue. The new program, complete with new website, has created opportunities for learners to browse and register for an array of courses that they can tailor to study at their own pace.
